Re: Dog Bone Torture Test Results

It's not the wheel bearings that are prone to failure on the Savage XL but actually the longer axles.  I couldn't believe it but I just snapped my front/right axle on my XL.  I was jumping it at the local bmx track and it landed kinda funny off a jump with the front/right wheel touching do...

Re: Dog Bone Torture Test Results

without the wider axle extensions like the XL version which puts a lot of stress on the hubs.  Before I even bought my XL, I was skepticle about those axle extensions because I also figured they would stress out the axle bearings.  I've been jumping the truck for months now and the bearin...

Re: Dog Bone Torture Test Results

The Savage XL dobones seem to be the same thickness as the original dogbones, but their that thickness the whole length of the dogbone; instead of the orginal dogbones which tapered thinner just before the ends (which is why they always broke right before the end).  Also, the ends on the XL dog...

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

That's so *censored*.  I would've sent you a link for the right diffs on ebay last week, but I couldn't find any for sale.  On the Ofna site, I even tried to find out specifically what Hyper model these 8 gear diffs came in, but they're non-existent.   I've done the same thing on ebay...

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

The Ofna diffs I bought came with metal diffcases.  Are you sure yours even have 8 spider gears in them?  It's hard to find any info or pics of these diffs but I managed to find the odd pic: This is what the inside of the diff looks like, copy/paste the link m On ebay I found my diffs thou...

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

I'm kinda stuck. The ofna hyper 8 ring gear will not fit on the savage cup properly. The hyper 8 diff will fit in the bulk head though. I might end up taking my diff cups to work and have the machine shop make them fit. So no luck so far. Or are you saying the shaft of the savage outdrive is too big...

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

cgabs how did you find out this would work? Just woundering. I found the info on a forum years ago, but can't remember which one.  haha been too long!  These Ofna diffs won't let you down though; I've been running mine for years with .32+ engines with hardly any maintenance (just grease t...

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

electricnitro,
Are you putting these diffs into a flux? If you are I'm anxious to see how they hold up against the brushless.  That'll be the true test for the Ofna 8 gears!

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

[ Did you have to change your gearing any after the install. Give some more detail if you can.] The spur gears on the Ofna diffs are gonna be smaller compared to your HPI ones, so I guess it'll be geared more for top speed.  But I doubt you'll even notice a difference because I couldn't see a n...

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

As I've said in another thread, I had the same problem with my savage XL outdrive bearings blowing up.  I think you're right in saying the diffs are fine but, I think my bearing quit just because the dogbone was too tight in between the cups putting too much pressure on the outdrive bearing. &n...

Re: Epic Transmission Fail - Savage XL

[quote="ualr_jmjones";p="704757"] The diffs that I went through were because of the cheap *censored* carrier bearings and lack of shimming from the factory.  Replace those bearings with some good ones, shim the diff to a nice tight fit - and voila - you get to buy a new tran...

Re: K4.6 and K4.6 HO

How I understood it was the K4.6 HO is supposed to be mean High Output even though according to Xtreme RC Car Engine Dyno Tests!  the dyno tests show the K4.6 HO has less horsepower, but more torque. HPI K4.6HO 1.28 @ 19,500 rpm 64.76 oz-in @ 19,500 rpm 32,000 rpm HPI Nitro Star K4.6 1.32 @ 22,...

Re: Engine upgrade

I've got a Savage XL and once my K5.9 starts to get tired, I'm gonna throw a Picco P3 .28 in it.  Check out dyno numbers for the engines your interested in; you'll find the Picco P3 28 pumps out the most horsepower.  So if I was in the market to buy a new engine right now, it would be that...

Re: Options for new diff mod for the savage

A good diff upgrade for the savage is Ofna 8 gear diffs (front or rear) out of a Hyper.  You need to change the diff cups to the savage ones and possibly the diff bearings(been too long...can't remember).  Other than that these diffs will drop right in, you just need to do some shimming fo...
