BCanes unofficial OFNA Hyper ST thread....

Post by bcane98 » Sun Jun 10, 2007 2:20 pm

Well I picked up a Hyper ST today from a friend who was not a big fan of the truck after a few tanks of fuel. I tell ya just from the couple of tanks of fuel I put through it today I am in love with it... It's pretty much stock right now with the MAC Star 28 with recoil start.

I'm no racer, so no need to spend a grip of cash on a truck when I like to race around a parking lot or some dirt in the big field... I might need to drop me a new motor in it though... probably something in the STS department.

Well it has been a while since I have run a mid diff, so what kind of oil weights are ya'll running?

Rick, bashing ya say? I run 30K front and 50K in the center and rear on my buggy and it seems to handle good. Might wanna try just the 50K in the center though.

Hyper ST i have heard rumours about that truck havnt seen one in person.. It carries the Hyper name so that can all mean one thing flat out performace...

I'd say wait for the new .28rr see how that things goes... Its supposed to a beastly motor... Drop a nice THS or Tsias pipe and you'll have the fastest basher in your area...

Awe man I love this thing... Got a question though...

The engine on this thing loves to run around 300-310 degrees in the dirt and puts out a very decent smoke trail. If I richen it (HSN) up the smoke trail becomes a smoke screen and it runs about 280's, but on boggy side. I even richened the LSN and temps hang in the 280 still...

I am aware the newer fuels today allow engines to run over 275 and isn't as bad as it used to be. I just got it and I am working on 10+ tanks...
I am going to change the diff oils per your suggestion Jesse...
I have not sealed the engine or anything yet...
I checked all the screws to ensure there was no obvious air leaks...

My knowledge base on the Hyper engines is something to be desired, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe this engine just likes to run hotter than normal...

It's hit or miss with the Hyper line of engines, I'd try to seal the back plate, carb, and the needles too. If all else fails, grab a good .28 like the LRP or STS.

what plug r u running?? the reasion im asking is because i was running a os#8 with 30% at 230-250 with no probs, and then i went to the lhs to get some more fuel and he was out of 30 so i had to get 25% and with the #8 it wouldnt run right and would want to run hot (even rich) so i swaped to a os a3 and got cooler temps and got to lean it out a bit too and with that came a ton more power.

It's the stock plug, so I would assume it is a Med Hot for break in... It's a turbo plug as well, but luckily I have some HPI plugs from an EBay deal gone bad. I believe they are Med Cold, so I will give those a try and see what results come from that.

Well I must say I love Xtreme RC Magazine... I wsn reading their article in the July issue and I notice they had some info on the engine.

Their running temps were 276... They gave a their needle setting as well... then I looked at the picture and totally missed the MSN... not the messenger

Anyway it looked like the MSN was messed with, so we'll see what happens tomorrow as it is getting dark over here now... My LSN is set to flush and my HSN is set to 1 3/4 in from flush...

The MSN will mess with your tuning drastically, so that must be the culpret.

I had a Mac Star well when i had them they were Called Mach's.. It wasnt a bas engine but it like to run hot 260 - 275 any coller and it would runn like poopies.. So its pretty normal its a hott running engine.. Like the STS... jus with half the power

Well apparently the MSN did not fix the problem either. Well maybe a little. Constant temps are in the 280 on road, but as soon as I go off road... BLAM... 300's. Any richer and the thing runs like a pig... plenty of smoke... nice idle...

HSN 1.5 turns in from flush... LSN 1/2 turn out from flush... MSN flush...

I have no clue, the engine seams to run perfect at 300... I let it idle for about 20 sec's after a run in the dirt and the temp drops down into the high 270's.

Oh well, I guess the next step is to take it out and seal it up...

I didn't think I was losing my mind... 280 is about as low as I could get it before it got all boggy... 301 was where it was running great with a nice smoke trail. I think I will still take it out and seal it up though. One of the piece of mind things ya know...

I must say this truck is NICE!

Anyone ever heard of the term Worm Clutch?

Soo then keep her running at 300 untill she pops.. when she does drop some serious power in there.. Specially if you have no intention of racing you can even go as big as a .30...

So I start thinking... Hmmm... Max said something about the STS30v1 having too many shims, so I check it out. It has 2, one silver (thick one) and 1 copper (thin one). Max said to remove some from the STS, so I will start with the copper one... Oh I also change my plug to an MC59...

I can now keep the truck running around 280, but I think this thing has a half lean problem... Once the fuel gets to about 1/4 temps run in the high 290's - 3low 300's...

Well good news... She runs in the 280's now... I imagine with some more tuning I will have it running in the 270's no problem. I changed the silver shim with the copper and this thing is a FREAK! Man it is insainly fast...

Is there a 2 speed for truggies?

There's a 2 speed for buggies, but it eliminates the center diff... Check Ofna's website.

Has anyone used the Losi 8ight (bug or trug) clutch on anything other than a Losi? I have been curious about this clutch since I first saw it. I know some members have asked the question, but not sure if there was ever an answer.

Ya it is for the 9.5 Violator... not sure if that would fit on the ST. Looks like you just need to change the spur on the center diff, but that is just an assumption.
