5 + years ago..savage rtr .21

Post by tbill » Mon Jun 23, 2008 7:40 pm

anyone still have a stocker? funny how time goes by. .21 big block, hardly seems imaginable with all the .30's out there. no cam type servo saver, 2 gear diff's, wheels that stripped out hexes like butter, nice soft red springs, primer equipt fuel tanks with front feed, 14/52 gearing [as the only option for a couple years], getting a box with the 'x' on it meant the .21's back plate was tight, blisters on your fingers from the .21's mega compression and notoriously hard starting, not realising that half the wheel nuts were reverse thread [ i know you 'old guys' remember tightening the heck out of those, and wondering why the heck they wouldn't come off], tranny one ways going bad, 2nd gear getting hammered and the shift pawl getting stuck in it resulting in no first gear.......

ahh, good times, really made you learn the truck......

good thing is, all the stuff we did to make the truck better got looked at by HPI [on this site for the most part i have to imagine], and they kept putting 'our' hop ups into the next production model.

you folks that are 'new' to the savage have no idea how much fun us 'old guys' have had hop-ing up the old .21 models....part of what makes this hobby, and the savage great!

I think it would be neat to have a never opened factory sealed .21
Savage, Mini-T, Wheely king, Slash. Too many hop ups to list.

If it isn't broken why not break it?

I never had a .21 savage, I started off with a very beat down p.o.s. SS4.6, 3-speed,
Dirt Bonz and a green 69 Charger body i brought used from Willis Hobbies for $100
seems like forever ago!

Hehe, nice post, tbill! I wasn't quite lucky enough to start off with the first .21, by the time I had enough money together for my first savage, the silly little 25 rtr was out.

I certainly had some of the same problems though. There was no cam servo saver, no 4 gear bevels, completely ineffectual brakes, radio box that was like trying to fit 50 clowns in a tiny little car, tiny little air filter, etc. It blew me away though

hi there tbill, well the funny thing about this post is i have only been in r/c for 7-8 moths now and my first r/c was a savage 3.5 ( not the x brand, new in the box ) so the good old days for me is well 230 days old lmao, i found this site and all the helpfull boys have helped me out, i now have 4 savages, x ss k4.6 purenitro powered flm ext, cen mid tank racer by 2 and the list goes on with out the boys i would still be bashing the 3.5 each week end.

Now week ends are filled with racing my 2 flm savages and the 2 bashers the kids and wife drive the tracks on practice days and any time im tuning and modifying mine funny thing the r/c world but im hooked and will be around a while yet...

My girls brother-in-law has a bone stock 1st editon savage 25 sitting in his garage. He never even broke it in. He said he got it running a couple of times but proved to difficult so he gave up. Hes not a big R/C fan, he just bought it cause it seemed cool.
Ive been wanting for him to sell it to me but Im not prepared to give him more than $150 dollars for it haha.

Love the break-in stand! I started with a 25rtr with 2 gear diffs, that was a while ago. They just started to throw the extra 4-gear diffs in the box. I made it a gallon without a single trouble from that truck. Never really had any trouble with it other than the usual newbie learning curve. WHY HAVE I STRIPPED 10

Yeah I started out with a shiny red .25 RTR back in '05, with the 2 gear diffs.

Most of the things we considered as hop ups back then are now standard parts on the X 4.6. HPI have pretty much nailed all of them thus far, that's why I won't be surprised if the next savage is mid-tanked.

Hehe I loved that cute little air filter, but my feelings weren't the same for the radio box, my immortal plastic nemesis...

I bent innumberable butter rollbars that were stock with the 25.

Ah good times, many runs and much $$ back...

Hahaha, I couldn't agree more! And look on tbill's picture, on the picture on the box of the .21, and you can see how small the very original filter was. EVEN SMALLER!

I just started runing my savage 21 again. bought it new when they first came out ran it a few years then all my friends got to busy with kids and family. We recently started runing again my one friends cousin built a nice r/c track and I finally bluw up my original 21 engine I actually got about 10 gallons or more through the motor! I stoped counting after 8 gallons but I know I atleast bough 2 more after that maybe more LOL. I just put my spare motor in last week, another stock 21 motor I had new in the box from way back when I bought the truck I had bought a new spare stock 21 motor.

The only hop ups I have are a nova head, tuned pipe, motorsaver air filter and a fuel tank off a 25 savage. Oh and HD dod bones and cups. I love this truck never really tore anything up on it. Never even had to tear the tranny down yet.

I will try to upload some pic's

I think that is the best thing hpi could have done. I reality thats some of the best R&D you can do. too bad other companys dont do the same thing.

hats off to HPI

My first real mod on my 22 was the monster pirate servo saver before HPI came out with the Cam saver.

Its amazing how much has been updated done a redone with these trucks.

And 10 years later I'm going to be talking about my Savage X with its vintage air-cooled engine and its half-tank lean. Whose the veteran now? :D

wow, old thread, good topic, posted some pics of a 25 that I resurrected from the clutches of death...

on deathbed:

Image

Re-freshed with minor upgrades, xl battery box, air cleaner, 4 gear diffs, blue springs to match body. mostly parts I had laying around, T-max wheels came on truck so they stayed for now, and the big heavy hot bodes rims/tires are just pretty much for pictures as they are heavy as *censored*.
