My vintage Tamiya King Cab Hardbody, still runs awesome!

Post by spokanevr4guy » Wed Mar 03, 2010 5:11 pm

I found this in the garage a few days ago and thought I'd tear her down and fix it. It was put in a box before I went to college and was forgotten about. The diff was slipping badly but after some loctite on some diff screws and some wrenching she's as good as new, thought undoubtedly a bit more brittle than her glory days. This truck is over 20 years old and implements the "manual" speed control using a servo and a "contact" wheel that increases the voltage the further the servo arm pushes the metal disc along the contact path. For many veteran R/C guys this is basic knowledge, but I figured some of the young guys may have never seen one before.

Anyway, I thought you guys would appreciate some pics!

I love the King Cab and I want one.  I am always looking on the bay for a good price on one.

Well, If you're still looking to get one, maybe we can make a deal. Originally I was getting this running so I could let my young son start practicing on a decent R/C. But considering this is well on it's way to being a collectors item and the parts aren't as easy to find, there's no point in letting an inexperienced driver get ahold of it.

If you have something to trade I may be interested, if not, I'm sure we can come up with a reasonable price. The biggest issue with the truck is the body. If you ever owned one, you know that poly body is super thin and brittle. The corners have some damage, but other than that (and some normal wear and tear), it's in excellent condition. The manual speed controller is showing standard signs of wear (It doesn't have full range going forward. There are a few dead spots at about 30% throttle and 80=100% throttle, a common problem with any manual speeed controller. Short answer, it just needs a new speed controller.

Anyway, if you want it, let me know any maybe we can work something out. I think I'd rather see it go to a collector than to use it as a trainer.

Hmmmm. I did that once already and I did it again just now. If you didn't get a message I'd have to question wether or not the PM system is working properly.

Got the truck in the mail today and yes it is a well preserved truck.  I had one of these about 12 years ago and got rid of it been kicking myself ever since.  I had to run a pack just to get the feel again ran like a champ, love it.
