Accurate Shipping Cost?

Post by cmt56ss » Sun Sep 16, 2007 5:05 pm

I just went to order a gallon of fuel from Hobby Fever, but it listed the shipping weight as 27.5 pounds, can that be accurate for a gallon of fuel?

A quart is 32 oz, and that shipping weight is listed as 2.5 pounds, 4 quarts are in a gallon (128 oz), so shouldn't the weight be around 10 pounds?

I'm not sure if the shipping calculator is off, but there is no way I'm spending $25 of shipping for a gallon of fuel.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe for fuel, Haz Mat (Hazzardous Materials) fees are included. If you are mail ordering fuel, your best bet is Quarts, they do not fall under Haz Mat the way gallons do. I know for a fact that My LHS waits until they are almost out of fuel, then they order 30+ cases at a time to save on the Haz Mat fees, because they want to save us a bit of money, with out ripping us off on quarts of fuel.
Quick answer is that the 27 LBS figure includes Haz Mat fees, but again, I am not 100% sure about this.

Well I figured it included some sort of fee, due to the fact it is hazardous, but the fact it says 27.5 pounds kinda threw me. I order 2 quarts because that's all they had in stock, which is fine for now. I'll definitely order it by the quart in the future!!!

Maybe they add some extra protective material inside the box and also use different, harder, heavier packaging for hazardous items?

...just thinking out loud.
