UPS really sucks!!

Post by SavageDynasty » Sat Mar 28, 2009 11:03 pm

First of all, I made my first purchase on SC store last week.  I'm from Canada, the total was about $42.

I don't know why USPS is more expensive than UPS.  UPS was around $14, USPS was about $22 on SC store for shipping to Canada.

I want to say one thing about UPS.  They charge about $27 broker fee for all items into Canada, I believe Fedex does that too.

I was charged additional $27 at the door for a $42 order

the reason you are charged a fee when you buy things form other countries is to promote buying products inside the usa. and ups fedx and all of them have no controll on the amount of duty that is to be collected. when you make a purchase from an seller outside the usa ask them what the duty is on it and then make a decision on wether it is such a  great deal.

from past experiance, fed ex and ups will charge the shipping rate up front and you will be charged duty and taxes when its delivered (or 2 months later you will get a bill). usps will charge the taxes up front so when its delivered to you, you pay only the duty if there is any.

USPS is always good because you don't get charged, at least I haven't, and they mail everything to your P.O. box.  Then you get the slip in your mail box deal and then go and get your package from the office.

yeah... Although I do admit that that $27 broker fee is retarded. We have similar tacked on fees and amped up taxes but I haven't had to pay that much just for a added fixed fee (although I've paid a LOT more in straight out import tax)
I feel your pain buddy.

Parcelforce used to charge 13.50 pounds which was pretty *censored* close to $27 when the exchange rate was around 2:1, although they since dropped that to 8 pounds looking at my recent bill from them.

Got a 450 pound import sitting with parcelfarce now and have to pay a total of 101.49 to clear it and bring it home, thats 21.53 import duty, 71.96 VAT and 8 parcelforce clearance charge.

I acutally wouldn't mind so much if it was just the VAT and a small % to parcelforce towards their admin costs but the import duty I think is completely BS. That said i'll just be happy to get my recent purchase in 1 piece.

BTW why dosn't the pound symbol work?...

Well we souldnt be getting duty tax on items coming from the US to Canada because we have free trade with the US but the US got all up tight with Canada soft wood lumber and said *censored* it we having tariffs now. Like free trade is trade so we shouldnt be taxed on anything coming in or out of the US.

Got back from the parcelforce depot with my new toys - yay. You know I said the clearance fee was ?8 for parcelforce, for me it was but the guy next to me getting wacked for importing a DVD boxset had to pay ?13.50 clearance fee - while I with a whole new RC got ?8... Its a weird world we live in.

A while back our glorious leader G.Brown was on the telly talking about echonomic recovery and how countries shouldn't be tempted to go into protectionism, i.e protecting their own home products by restricing imports through red tape like import duty. It made me laugh since the UK has been at it for years and still is, some of the worst and I mean worst customs rates, they attack each incomming box like no other. If you have something that is a warranty replacement part and marked as such but the sender puts a value on it (for their own insurance reasons) they will bill you for it anyway, even if your successful in reclaiming the VAT & Import duty which on a small warranty replacement part isn't alot you don't get back the clearance fee or the extra weeks spent waiting for the part.

This is a big part of the reason stuff in the UK is so expensive to begin with, if you consider that any importer while they can reclaim the VAT can't reclaim the import duty or clearance fees, so in addition to the cost of shipping goods to the UK there is an additional 5-10% additional cost thanks to customs and thats before the goods even hit the shelf. Its not like there are even any UK made substitutes for alot of the stuff we want.

In the last year UK customs have become really aggressive, probably trying to spin as much revenue as possible to protect their jobs and pull the government out of the massive black hole it got us into in the first place blowing all our tax money...

Like Lunar said, everybody has to pay the customs & excise duties. The end consumer (you and me)  has to pay VAT as well, so these two costs would have been paid even if you bought from your LHS.

UPS, Fedex or whoever can't be blamed for simply doing their jobs and acting within the law.

Customs & Duties charges are normal.  But the brokerage charge is an additional charge collected by UPS and Fedex on top of the custom dueties.  If it was like couple dollars, that is fine.  But they charge $20+ brokerage fee for a $5 too.
