On the verge of giving up.

Post by americandrug » Sun Mar 10, 2013 6:22 pm

I've had my savage for 3 months now and have yet to have it running for more than a couple minutes at a time. I've dropped a lot of money already and still can't get her running. Getting to the point where I want to give up. Latest problem was suspension broke so I put new big bores on. After that its not running so I sealed every area I can think if an air leak. Now she refuses to idle for more than 5-10 seconds without touching throttle, or start without throttle. It's gotten so frustrating and I'm tired of tinkering and dropping mo eh into something that refuses to work. I've adjusted all fuel settings over and over and over. It's an older savage, 21 or 25 with mach 427. Just very aggravating seeing people enjoy these things while mine is a pos and refuses to run. I have a buggy that runs great and very easy to tune or fix anything. Any ideas why she won't start without touch throttle, or stay idle????

My first guess is adjust your idle gap. And possibly the motor is just a goner. Don't give up its to addicting! Once the bugs are worked out you'll be satisfied

Ok so after I calmed down I started thinking it may be fuel problem. I think I'm going to put the tank on top just to see if its lack of fuel pressure. If that's the problem then what do I need for the tank mod in place of battery/receiver box?

+1 on that.. its very addicting, and when u have it right u will love it and u will enjoy it.. just takes time to get there.. motor may be gone but sounds like it may be too rich on the lsn or idle is off.

idle gap. maybe to fat needles, check your fuel tank for holes. ive had 2 fuel tanks and they got a hole in the same place both of them. (in front of the screw that holds the shock).

have you checked your clutch? maybe its hanging. I had this problem for a while with my f 4.6. and the engine would always stall when i tried to get the idle down.

and lastly check that glow plug and your glow plug igniter. take the plug out and put it in the glow igniter and check that its lighting up always when you stick it in there. If you have another plug try to change it.

and check the fuel lines!

Do you know how old the engine is? it could be as simple as that the engine is done. or the engine could be leaking, try seal it up if you havent done it.

good luck

+1 on this and...

I treat my vehicles and their engines like they are two separate entities because, well, they are.

Don't give up on it just yet, there are lots of people on here that are very experienced and can get you sorted out if you give all the details.

One of the be ways to show everyone whats goin on is a video with sound, i've done a few and its way easier than trying to type in the sounds your truck is making

I had several issues with two used Savages.  I dumped hundreds of dollars into them and they would never run.  Ultimately I ended up buying a new engine for one and selling off the other Savage.  The new engine fixed most of my issues and it'll run tank after tank now.  When your new to the hobby and you have worn equipment it's hard to tell if your causing the issue or if it's an equipment issue.  In my case it was probably both but the main issue was with the engine itself.

I'm thinking it could be the engine as well. What are some cheaper but reliable power engines?

Some options worth considering for $170 or less.

OFNA Hyper 21 for $130
HPI F4.1 for $150
OFNA Force .32 for $160
HPI F4.6 for $163
LRP .28 for $170

Best bang for the buck I would say is the Hyper21 but you really get your monies worth out of the F4.6.  IMO these are all actually worth more than they typically sell for and they are all easy to tune.

I do have an ofna buggy with .26. Very easy to tune and runs great even after hard bashing. Is the ofna .21 good power/torque?

The chop shops on ebay really are hard to beat. A full set of black chrome warlocks on gt2 tires for $40 shipped is just insane. And I agree on the HPI engines being worth more than they are sold for. Both 4.6s ive had experience with are very easy to tune and good powerhouses

Picco .28's are a great engine, very fast in the savage chassi.

As far as tuning goes, I understand you have experience with your buggy, but the tuning guide and idle setting guide in the engines forum stickies might give you some better insight or just a "lightbulb" moment on those trouble days.

Went today to hobbytown and they had a picco 28 but its for the traxxas. Had the tiny tiny exhaust port. Was a sad day. I'm still planning on finding one local but if not ill have to amazon one(eBay account isn't working)..
