[quote="messiah1";p="840320"]I say, even if the details are sketchy on some of them, it doesn't matter as much because you're just going to bash with it.

Cut the test body out a bit better and tried it on the truck. Some points still need some triming off.

Cheers dddddale.

I picked up some dental stone which is a very hard plaster of paris so I'll cast the buggy body and then the 1/8 truck body over the weekend.
Still need to chat to the local guy here how to go about making a custom mold.

Just wanted to check in to see how the Custom Vacuum Former is going and to see if you had any updates. I am wanting to build one for myself. Im already making my own molds for fishing lures that I paint. Now I want to branch off into making my own rc bodies. So any and all info is much needed.

Thanks

Well I have no problems heating the plastic it's just timing how long the plastic is heated before placing it on the former. I do need to get a vacuum cleaner with a stronger suction to pull the plastic better around the bucks (current one just lacks that little bit more pull to get all the details). One problem that happens is when you have to heat the plastic beyond the ideal forming temp because there isn't enough suction which causes bubbling of the plastic (not good and weakens the plastic).

So what thickness of the plastic you are going with? I seen earlier you said about 4mm, but I cannot find that size, they have sizes in 0.020" and  0.060. Ive also found a site (WidgetWorks) that sells Styrene Thermoform Plastic Sheets, ABS Thermoform Plastic Sheets, PETG Thermoform Plastic Sheets and Polycarbonate / Lexan Thermoform Plastic Sheets. All in different sizes and thickness.

I've been testing 2mm ABS (white body I did) and also some 1.5mm PETG (over the 5SC body). The plastic will stretch more in different areas of the buck so for the roof you will get the 2mm or 1.5mm thickness but down the sides it will thin out to say 0.8-1mm so you have to test what works best for the shape/body you are trying to form. Stretch also depends on the amount of time the plastic is heated for so like I said before I had over heated the plastic to compensate for the lack of suction but this caused the plastic to be thin in a few areas and weaken it.

I'll post up some photos latter of the 5SC body I did using 1.5mm PETG which was the first go at such a large body. It would of worked pretty well but the buck wasn't well enough supported to withstand the amount of suction of the vacuum and it started to compress the buck as the plastic was being formed so had to stop the pull. The body that formed looks a bit munted with crease lines from the plastic over lapping    :P
