To belt or not to belt?

Post by GSGA » Mon Jan 09, 2012 2:30 pm

Got some new dirtbonz for my blue groove rims.

Gonna run them on dirt or grass until it cuts up.

Not sure if I'll get more grip without belting.

I guess if I get any straight line speed up the truck will be more stable if belted.

Think thats possibly the answer but want some opinions.

Cheers

I think belting will just make em better all around, especially on dirt. A little bit of wheel spin and they balloon right up, I found that out with the GT2s on Gravel. Same thing whith wheelies, ride them out and the front balloon up.

Belted on BG wheels have given me the best all road tire so far.

Belt them. I've used many different cheap duct tapes and you need the strongest tape you can find and wrap them twice. I run 6s and managed to break all the belts in my tires with the cheap duct tape wrapped once. With the new stronger tape I have no problems just make sure you get a tape that is 45-50mm wide, 25-30mm tape isn't wide enough.

I was leaning towards belting but i've got the idea now of one strip of tape right down the middle.

Keep my flexible tyre for digging in but gain straight line stability?

Half and half, maybe the best of both worlds then?

Might be the way to go.

Yup just lay the tape out on the table and roll the tire over the tape keeping it centred. Don't need to put any force down onto the tape just let the tire roll naturally over the tape.

Yeah sound good.  I went with 1 time around & quality tape, but for the flux that might not be enough, works great with Nitro though :)

I like the ribbed sidewalls in the Dirt Bonz, that too must help with ballooning, sure helps reduce sidewall flex in corners.

The flux really gives the tires *censored*. The dirt bonz on the flux really do the same as the Gt2 tires and balloon up something wicked literally turned them inside out :D

Good tip.

I'm not gonna go full width, just an inch, maybe inch and a half down the middle. With nitro that should be enough.

My flux blew up a GT2, they're evil on tyres.

What type of tape do you use, never heard of belting or taping so I might try it. You guys have any pics of belting or taping?

I used 2" duct tape. just make sure the layers are even.
Mark where you start the first layer and stop the second where the first starts.
It works great.
It will keep your tires from balooning at high speeds.
You will have a greater contact area when your at top speed.

Gorilla tape is the best I've found and it comes in the perfect width!

If you do belt them use a heat gun to heat up the tape afer it is applied.
It will make the tape super sticky.
Then use a rag while the tire is still warm and rub the tape.

I like that,I do that on the next set of wheels I belt up.

Any pics out there of this belting procedure?

I've got a set of aluminum rims on the way and I think I'm going to mount GT2 tires, not sure though, still researching my options.

That's one bell or whistle that really annoys me about this forum, no subscription characteristics.

The search sucks too, I find threads easier looking for them through Google

Gorilla tape is just stronger and the adhesive is great. I have only used a single wrap and if that starts to fail I will do a double wrap. I overlap the tape by no more than a inch then I cut the same size piece as the overlap and stick it on opposite side as a balance weight! The tape is not cheap but a roll will do many sets of tires.

I stopped taping my tires,,the ballonning tire gives me more control in the air,,

But alot of guys like them taped,,

here is a thread on taping tires,,remember this is for nitro,,Flux will need better tape.
