Whilst I can't tell you the reasons that he put the engines backwards (it could be style, weight distribution, or it could have just fit in to the design better that way) I can tell you that it is easy to reverse the drive train - just flip the diffs over. You need to remove a small tab that would usually discourage you from accidentally getting them the wrong way, but apart from that it's easily done.

I would love that kit. I would tuck it in at night and make it breakfast in the morning. Nitroeos and oil as part of a complete breakfast.
