budget twin

Post by nitronly » Sat Feb 16, 2013 9:06 am

I have always wanted to do a savage twin. It seems it was kind of a fad that died as quickly as it started and now with all the brushless power and modded 28s nobody does them anymore. I just think it would be a fun build. I plan on designing templates for the chassis, motor plate, centre skid and tank plate then having them made. I will use 2 ebay losi 454's and 2 ofna pipes. I plan on doing a 6mm front extended chassis using a rear dogbone up front and a 1 1/2" extended rear. I will use 2 mugen tanks up front on a plate between the tvp's with the steering servo underneath on it's side. The battery and rx will be in an e savage radio box on the front tower in between the tower and bumper. The throttle/ brake servo will fit between the tanks and transmission. This is all just planned out in my head for now but I will be starting to make my cardboard templates soon. I have a simple tvp design drawn out but need to make some changes around the transmission and I have talked to a machinest friend who is willing to make the tvps, engine plate, tank plate and bottom skid plate.
I was hoping to do the whole truck for under $1000 (ironically both my single engine savages cost more than that) but looking at the parts list I realize it will be around $1500. Here's my parts list so far:

2 losi 454 $250 shipped from ebay
2 ofna pipes $110 locally
2 headers (I think novarossi makes mirrored left and right) $60ish
2 sets of ofna 1/8 scale universal engine mounts
2 mugen mbx-5 fuel tanks $50
Not sure what the plates will cost to have made but hoping no more than $200-300
xl bulks with diffs from ebay
xl dogbones from ebay
xl wheel axles from ebay
plastic bigbores
stock savage steering crank with bearings
all metal bp 3 speed (already have most of the parts)
flm shock towers
flm servo mounts
alza bulk braces
rpm arms
integy rear carriers
gpm front hubs
gpm front knuckles
servos??
wheels??
tires??

The design of the chassis will certainly have changes made before i'm ready to have it cut. I'm trying to figure out what I can use to make a template stiff enough to mock up bulks and a trans so I can work on designing the tank plate and motor plate to fit.
Maybe some thin plywood, like 1/4 inch. I think I know someone who has a jigsaw or bandsaw I can borrow to cut it. I'm hopefully going to have a new job by next month and be able to buy

Do you have a rear center dog bone yet?
Also because you are making your own engine plate and the cooling heads may touch take a look at these engine mounts.

Those are the type i'm gonna use. I don't have dogbones yet. I'm thinking of using the ones for the irc 1" ext rear plates.

I would use the savage xl rear center dog bone because it is an easily replaceable part.

Glad to see you moving forward with this man. I bought all my parts for my twin, but it has sat on the side. I just need to make the tvps and motor plate. Then bolt it together lol.

I think the cen fuel tank that everyone use to use for a mid tank would be the best option for two tanks.

It was a CEN radio box. Its a Mugen tank. MBX5T. You can fit two side by side between the tvps neatly. Good tank and readily available.
