XSS - V2.0 - NOVAROSSI / IRC

Post by Mendoza » Sat Jul 04, 2015 7:15 am

Hi All,

Firstly thanks to SC, for providing the inspiration and to SV250 & NitroJedi for good advice.

This is about rebooting the legendary XSS with a new powerplant ... and a bunch of other stuff after I got poisoned again by the RC hop-up bug. Nothing revolutionary about my build unlike many of SC's members unbelievable Savages ... I just wanted to build a tight rig that's superior to factory with top quality components. The process started today after getting the last of my shipped parts and I plan to get everything finalised by Sunday so I can kick-off the break-in process.

Key objectives
Sweet Factory Italian mill - power upgrade over k4.6
Higher revving beastability - constant power band from bottom to top
Extended (but not XL length) lowered chassis to improve handling and pipe/mani options
Upgrade shocks and chassis - future proof for serious bashing and mega air
Upgrade drive train and chassis for future modded mill and mid tank mod
Get rid of purple anodised parts

Summary of inventory:
Savage XSS, IRC race 1inch rear/6mm front ext TVPs, IRC back anodised engine plate and skid plate, de-anodised bulk head plates, Nova 28-8, Nova 9886 pipe, grinded 4001 mani, IRC XXL LST2 Shock conversion, IRC full hex screw kit, black proline F11's, Proline shock wave tyres, TA blue 17mm hubs (narrow), savox high torque servos, dx4s, 0.5 inch lowered all round, 1.5 inch wider track, re-built SV250 BP 3-speed with high speed 3rd gear (I'll be doing break-in using the 2speed), ofna throttle/brake upgrade, silver integy throttle mixer, custom HTL mod, blue ano large stone ofna filter, higher capacity fuel lines, 20k rear silicone diff oil, 10k front.

Im posting purely to give back to SC ... And despite being in RC for a while (cars, trucks, heli's and planes) I've never wanted to be on any forums until SC ... and the Savage is the most bashable, upgradable, extreme thing I have enjoyed most of all. It started for me way back with my Savage 25.

I'll post some pics soon.

Peace brutherz

Bolt on horsepower, nova 28-8 rotostart and spare after run oil, glow plugs arrived in a separate package. I'll be using #5 plug (hot) for break in because it's winter in Sydney at the moment. Probably about 16-20 degrees during the day... Doesn't get that cold down under  8)

throttle/brake linkage gear, mixer, blue 25mm long savox saver which should give me plenty of TVP clearance for the rods.

I like the stock set up but I couldn't say no to these at the price I paid. They're huge and feel like great quality - will be even better when the blue ravenrc springs arrive. Only issue is they do add some weight to the truck especially with the conversion kit.

Two sets of IRC TVPS and full hex screw kit for two trucks .. Black look awesome but I'm bolting on the race option... 153grams v 82grams per plate... Think I'll throw the black ones on my Sav25 with the new LRP30 I've never used (but thats for another day)

Rotostart in the wrong side ... But nova has a really good adjustable system - best I've seen... So it's easy to rotate it and adjust so it's in the right spot for the starting shaft even with 0.5 inch lowered engine plate height.

Carb rotated to suite the savage - did the same with the rotostart, applied threadlock to holding screws and put the 9mm Venturi in .. What I love about this engine already is the completely sealed backplate and how tightly sealed the carb is to the induction inlet... This engine is tighter than a fishes ar$e and the internals are really well finished. Different world to the K4.6 and definitely superior to the LRP 30.

Time to get busy ... Exhaust also arrived earlier today which I need to grind at the manifold because it's a left hand set up like most systems ... Which is annoying because I won't get to see the etching in the mani or pipe once it's mounted. But I'll get over it once this beast starts screaming.

Couldn't help but throw on the 17mm hex's ... Beautiful fit, real tight, same size pins and only 6mm offset... I don't want to go too wide - I like the proportions of the X. Can't wait to get rid of the purple.

New black anodised IRC engine plate and integrated cross braces - it's solid... Big improvement over stock which was chewing into the sides of the engine mounting screws.

Gearbox mounted... The black TVPS in the background would have looked better but I figured less rolling mass would be be lower stress on the new engine during break-in.

Front and rear ends reassembled. The TVP assembly went smoothly apart from having to file a little material out of the area where the engine plate sits on top of. And had to Dremel about 0.5mm out of the TVP engine plate mounting hole on the left hand side. Integy throttle mixer is smooth (ball bearings) but the alu is soft as butter.

Engine mock up mount needs more grinding but ran outta time today. Looks good in the truck. Going to have to start the manifold mod and exhaust hanger tomorrow.
