Hpi suspension conversion, Helfire shocks, Nova Power!

Post by NizzleMaShizzle » Sun Aug 02, 2015 11:21 pm

I had a busy weekend wrenching on my Savage. My previous setup included the Integy hubs, casters, steering knuckles, and Losi LST shock conversion. Dry weight without fuel and battery, my truck was 13 lbs and some change. Too hefty. So I decided to buy Hellfire shocks, and replaced the Integy with the HPI Suspension Conversion set. Now my rig stands at 11 lbs 2.5 oz. Keep in mind, the stock savage is around 11 lbs 6oz. So my rig is longer, wider, and more rigid than a stock savage while being lighter to boot!

I am also excited about the HPI savage conversion because it unlocks more adjustments for the savage, including changes in the design and suspension geometry to improve steering and handling. This includes adjustable uppers for camber, relocated upper arm brace that is designed to change the roll center aiding in reducing traction roll, alloy rear spindle carriers that adds a natural degree of toe-in angle, and alloy steering knuckles which adds more caster angle. I'm hoping this conversion will make my savage responsive, planted, and more nimble than before--able to take on the power of the Nova!

Speaking of Nova, I also installed this mill as well! It's a TNS Modified Rex Legend 28-8 Rotostart modded by Neal Smith. It's currently rocking 17/45 gearing which has slightly more torque and less top end than 18/47 gearing. Although the overall gearing is a little on the high end/top speed side, since this is a modded mill, i'm hoping that the power of the mod Rex will pull the higher gearing. Also, important note....for you guys that have this mill or are thinking of getting one...U have to grind the right side TVP to get to the idle speed screw. When you flip the carb over for savage applications, the idle needle on the Rex 28-8 points downwards at an angle, so the only way to reach it is from underneath the exhaust. Once again, the TVP needs to be grinded.....All in all im anxious and can't wait to get her started!

Nice wrk Nizz!!! Truggy stylz - looks the business as usual

Surprised you dropped over 1kg (2 lbs) ... the XXL shocks don't even weigh that in total... most of It must have come from swapping out the integy stuff?

Noticed the THS pipe. Got one in reserve - was intending to use the mani with a JP-4. Keen to see what you think of the pipe tho.

How much does your rig weigh without battery or fuel?

Based on your shocks and wheel/tyre combo prob more than yours ... But to be confirmed when I have time to weigh it. I'll post up a pic when she's on the scales.

Here's a little short run of my rig immediately after break in. I didn't touch the needles other than leaning it out during the process so that it doesn't puke all over the place and cutout during break in. This engine is a monster and I can't wait to put a performance tune on it. I also heard Cesare Rossi (CoFounder/Owner of Novarossi) passed away recently...R.I.P. and I am honored to have one of his mills on my savage.

Awesome! You work fast - wish I could spend a whole weekend on mine, build it and break it in. But no chance. I've had 3 hours of spare time the last couple of weeks - it killing me hahaha.

I ended up burning up around 3/4 a gallon all in one shot. I hate to do that id rather spread it out, but I know I'm gonna be busy the rest of the week so I had to knock it all out.
