Re: Vorza/Savage BP diff How to

Post by donyms » Sat Dec 14, 2013 10:55 pm

Thanks for this thread LL and all the good info. After reading everything over and over I decided to get the Vorza diffs and use the HR spiral cut gears for the Savage, put some 50k oil in, shim the diffs and put my New sealed bearings in and be done with it. Although my bearings went out completely on the diffs, I mean nothing left but the inner and outer race my gears were still perfect ring and pinion as well as the spiders. My drive pins broke in the rear though. LOL I think I should check the bearings in the diffs more often. Anyway, thanks for the write up and all your help. Also, thanks to the others that have weighed in with some good info. Savage Central rocks in my book.  8)

Donyms, Give an update when you get the spiral ring & pinion installed and running. What motor/esc/lipo you running? Because I was looking at those as well. I am curious if it runs smoother & quieter than the Savage BP ring & pinion

I am in the process of getting all the parts shipped in to rebuild my diff with the GPM Bevel Gear set, HB diff cup, BP Savage ring & pinion, 500k diff oil in my Alza 5b with a Castle 1717 & Toro 200a on 4-6s.

I also just bought 2 sets of HPI101142 Hardened Gears for the Trophy Flux to try out with the HB diff cup & see how it works.
Alza 5b/Savage Flux, CD kit, Toro Ex 200a w/ Castle 1717, LST shocks, 6 point slider shafts, RPM Arms all around, Integy fixed HD rear hubs

3908 Emaxx, SC8 Waterproof ESC w/ Tork 2200kv, Savox SW-0231mg, RPM Arms, Shock towers, Bulkheads and braces.

Sorry for the delayed response. Those big flat shims come in the pack when you buy a new alloy cup. You don't have to run them and in my twin flux I am not.

Hot racing does make some good stuff so I to look forward to hearing how the helical gears work out

I've run a few packs through my Flux with the spiral ring and pinion. No problems so far.

I run a 1717 motor and XL2 ESC, always on 6S. My truck is pretty heavy also.

Can't say its quieter though. Maybe it's such a minor difference I haven't noticed.

I do not currently have a thread. I have thought about making one. What chassis kit you running?

Also worth noting, I am using a set of 6 point spline axles that I got off of ebay for about $100. They do away with drive cups & dog bones all together.....

Do I need to use the square steel pieces that fit in between the shim & gear that come in the stock BP diff? I dont see them in any of your pics, but I figured it wouldnt heat to ask, just in case.

No you don't use those with the buggy diff housings. Just use the shim, gear, and shaft

hey, new poster, long time lurker.

the hot bodies part numbers that have been discontinued are available under new part numbers from hpi
so you'll need:

HPI101029

Do you have a link, name or part number for this, I would be interested in checking that out.  8)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4Pcs-Steel-U-JO ... 2eba144b38    XL Axles

http://www.ebay.com/itm/4Pcs-U-JOINT-HA ... 53e8f61450     X Axles

I have both, I have nor run the X Axles yet, but I recommend to anyone getting either of these, lock-tite every grub screw & possibly just replace them with better quality grub screws because the ones they come with strip rather easy.

Ok here's a long over due update. You know that big shim I put under the big bevel gears. Well it's not needed, otherwards don't use it if you have. What happens is it makes the mesh to tight and the small gears rub on the shafts they sit on and create small metal shavings. Now I had now way of knowing this when I put mine together but I do know lol.

Side note, these are brand new never service diffs out if a savage X and look what we have hear a busted 10mm bearing lol

I have the original savage xl. My ? Should I purchase the diffs parts from the new savage xl 29/9  gears or purchase the entire shock tower housing front and back. To avoid doing the vorza/diff mod.  Or could I could I just buy the set 29/9 set  off tower  and replace. Will this work bc it seems to me it would be much easier to do that.

Man I wish I had read this thread all the way through. I just read the first build part and I had seen Savage Junkey's videos on YouTube and he said to run the GPM
Hard Diff Gear Set, I bought 4 of those at $35 each.....from Hong Kong. The part number HPI 101142 is $10 on ebay each. Lesson learned I guess.

I'm assuming that the new HPI ones are just as good as the GPM hardened ones?

The 101026 cup is the one to use. Fits exactly in the ring gear like they were made for each other. However, it does not come with a gasket or the small grub screw that goes in the side.

Yes savagenoob, you're right. As I just got a set of the diff housings and come across the same issue.

Seems hpi has messed up with their superceeded part #'s.
So llcoolskillet, if you update the first page make note to use the hpi101026 cups, as the one I mentioned is a hair too small to line up with the ring gear.

Hpi has since updated their website to use the new number. As I was just double checking so I could make them aware of the issue.
