The stock dogbones have a minimum diameter of 4mm, and the XL dogbones have a minimum diameter of 5mm. This gives them a cross sectional area 1.5625 times greater than that of the standard dogbones, so assuming identical steels, my educated guess for the failure point is 10.2ft/lbs.

I was wondering if the xl bones have been tested and how they are holding up. I am sick of breaking bones. I am ready to go to the xl bones conversion, but I was wondering how they are holding up. I know that gpm and Irc make bones, but I don't want to deal with the availability issues every time I need a bone.

Even though this thread is kinda old it still has a lot of good info.

I'm upgrading to the GPM Titanium dog bones. I'm tired of breaking the stock dog bones every time I bash.

I run the FLM bones.  That are the fattest out there that I know of and you don't need any conversion.  But I'd be interested in how those titanium ones hold up for you.

Savage xl bones all the way! They are stout. The conversion is about the same price as a set of gpm and you get new drive cups and axles. My savage has an RB 928 which is an animal. I would break a bone just about every tank. I installed the xl bone conversion and my bone snapping days are over. I have been giving them a serious beat down and they are holding up awesome. I picked up a spare set of xl bones on ebay for $10. My only complaint is they are squeaky in the drive cups. I tell my buddy thats the sound of bullet proof drivetrain.

The Savage XL dobones seem to be the same thickness as the original dogbones, but their that thickness the whole length of the dogbone; instead of the orginal dogbones which tapered thinner just before the ends (which is why they always broke right before the end).  Also, the ends on the XL dogbones are a lot thicker to fit the larger outdrives.  As far as testing goes, I haven't had a problem yet.  I took a look at them recently and they aren't even twisted, which is what happens to the original ones before they finally break.

The flux have bigger drive cups which are good for the X with larger XL dog bones, without the wider axle extensions like the XL version which puts a lot of stress on the hubs.

If you get the conversion kit, it comes with the standard length axles, which the flux is using. I think that the FLM bones would be good to, but when I went to order them, they were out of stock, and I didn't want to wait. I have also split open a stock x drive cup, which is why I went with the xl conversion to get the heavy duty cups.

 Before I even bought my XL, I was skepticle about those axle extensions because I also figured they would stress out the axle bearings.  I've been jumping the truck for months now and the bearings still feel silky smooth.  So now I love the extensions for how much more stability is gained, huge difference.

I haven't done my bearings, but because I'm also using heavy proline commando beadlocks with 23mm hexes, they have now sheared the pin grooves.....whether the the wider axles is the culprit, I'm not hundred percent sure.

Wider stance is really good for handling and landing.

no damage on the bones what so ever
just broke the arms and steering hub

It's not the wheel bearings that are prone to failure on the Savage XL but actually the longer axles.  I couldn't believe it but I just snapped my front/right axle on my XL.  I was jumping it at the local bmx track and it landed kinda funny off a jump with the front/right wheel touching down first; instantly snapped the axle and the wheel went flying!  Four years of jumping my original Savage SS I never broke an axle even with harsher bails.  Have to say these longer XL axles aren't as strong as the original style, but fully worth having on your truck for the stability.
