The proper way to adjust the slipper clutch is to tighten the nut down all the way and then back it out 1/2 turn. If the slipper clutch slips too much, tighten it another 1/4 turn. At this point, if it still slips too much then it's time to replace the slipper washer.
The slipper clutch should not slip too much because it could cause excessive heat and possibly damage the slipper washer or the spur gear. It should also not be too tight because in hard landings it could cause the spur gear to be stripped.
