buying a used Savage

Post by Savaged » Tue Jul 08, 2003 12:07 am

Opening the box of a spanking brank new Savage can be he greatest feeling in the world. The body is absolutely shiny, shock springs are glowing orange, shinny wheels with clean rubber...even the labels on the engine and fuel tank are cool. I can still remember opening my box for the first time...it almost made me cry.. ...well not really, but I imagine it could when I was younger. However, there's a lot to be said about purchasing a used Savage. Many of them have been hopped up extensively with all of the aftermarket goodies you could ask for, while many of them are bone stock with no mods. Then again, there are some pretty sad sellers out there that think they can get back every penny they invested in their truck often asking for close to double the cost of a new Savage..?? Every now and then, the perfect used Savage wlll present itself with an owner that just happen to lose interest in the hobby. That kinda Savage is the one you want..hopped up, taken care of, running, and best of all.....CHEAP! So keep your eyes peeled, and perhaps you can save yourself a bundle- with a nicely modified Savage that's easy on the pocketbook. With that being said...allow me to introduce my new "used" Savage which I got for a steal!

Here's a before picture of my used Savage #2- Got it for a STEAL of a price. Includes Force .25 , RB086 pipe, HB center CVD's, HB Heatsink Motor Mount, HB metal disc brake, HPI HD dogbones, Airtronics Steering Servo (200+oz/lbs), GPM alloy BB steering links, RPM Stablemaxxes, HB locking alloy wheel adapter, + lots of new uninstalled hop ups and other factory parts- on the downside, it didn't include a radio or receiver, the body was thrashed, and the fuel tank was cracked

Here are pictures of my used Savage after a complete tear down, modification, and installation of extra parts in my tool box. Mods include 4 spider diff w/ difflock, Dual Disc Brake with CF discs, Fender SS Screw kit, WFC 4lbs springs w/ 35wt rear and 30wt front, modified transmission (lightened alloy gears, etc), Throttle servo links mod, NovaRacing wheels w/ Proline Mulchers, New Era Bulkheads and bulkhead brace (rear only), etc. Just about all of these parts were sitting in my toolbox!

Thanks Savageer! Still trying to work out the kinks on it though. Yesterday, I started up the engine to see what it could do (this F.25 has the dreaded 3 needle carb). In roughly 65-68F outside ambient temperatures, it took at least 3 minutes of constant pulling and fiddling just to get that thing to fire up. Once I got it started though, it ran pretty decent. I did a few high speed passes (tranny wouldn't shift into second) and managed to keep the temperature between 240-250F. I did a few more high speed passes after making a small adjustment to the transmission when suddenly the temps started climbing over 270F and the engine shut down. It got soo hot that I could hear the fuel boiling in the carb and bubble formations would come out through the carb inlet nipple into the fuel line even as I continually primed the tank. I quickly realized that it was due to that dreaded 1/2 tank self leaning syndrome  I got so used to the Ofna Tank in Savage #1 that I wasn't even thinking about it... Well, that was the end of that. I had both an extra Ofna Tank and a Hayes 2oz tank sitting at home and I didn't want to risk damaging the engine so I packed up. I sealed the engine backplate when I took the truck apart the first time, but didn't inspect the carb at all since I had planned to replace it with the updated carb- but since I was already running the truck as is, I took apart the carb, inspected the O rings, and put it back together after resetting the needles back to their original settings and also slapped on the Nova Racing head from my other F.25 .
Today, I decided to do the dual tank mod to Savage #2. After having an YIM conversation with CRSMP5, I quickly whipped it together and took it out for a spin. Didn't run NEARLY as well as it did yesterday. The outside temps was pretty cold at roughly 56F and I had to run it super rich (remeber colder temperature has a geater oxygen density) to get any kind of performance out of it. Even an MC59 would stay hot with that kinda richness (it ran well with the igniter attatched to the plug though) and kept stalling. Throughout this time, I couldn't get the engine hot enough. After what seemed like hours of fiddling with it...It finally started to respond to my inputs then suddenly- I had a front wheel drive Savage.... the screwshaft that locks the rear diff cup to the pinion gear fell out  .
Game over.... packed up and went home....
I've thought about what went on tonight and got tomorrows plan of attack all set up. I'm definately gonna start my tuning session earlier in the day before it starts to get too cold.. Well, that's where I am with this truck...still work in progress.

Here's some pics of the Dual Tank Mod in my Savage- it's looks will take some getting used to :?

Well the USPS was like santa today with 2 boxes.. yes 2.. i got my picco carb from ebay.. will not fit 21bb but sure is perty for a 8 port.. and the basket case savage..

what did i get with basket case.. well  if anyone wanted a more basic roller this would be about as far as id take it.. no engine, no mount, no header, no fuel tank, no wheels, no body, no radio or receiver..

what kinda goodies did it come with.. rember i paid 160 shipped for this knowing the spur was stripped and no radio receiver.. no pics and no other info.. just pay and wait..

has all 6 HB CVDs, none with 2nd set screw either...
Aluminum brake hex
cf brake disk
ill assume for now a HPI light weight gear cause the stock one is sitting in a baggy.
spare uprights, skid, and control arm set.
hb wheel hexes..

160.. hmmm 60$ in cvds, 15$gear, 40$ in spare plastic, 15$ wheel hexes, 12$ hex, 10$ disk... so did i go wrong??

ill post pics later..

well she has been used now..
radio receiver FREE stole it from other RC car i have...plan to upgrade savage radio in future so all is good...

engine, my 21bb for now.. FREE

body FREE

Wheels and tires FREE

main fuel tank FREE, used solderin giron to fix my old cracked one.. 14$ save...

engine mount 6

header 16, came with engine gaskets, and springs though...

exhaust coupler for header to pipe 3

header tank to due tank mod 10

fuel filter 4

fuel hose 3

total cost in savage #2 202$... and a smile from ear to ear on my son..

now to add fun to it... what to buy still... on sat at the track they have a "open oval" a monster truck looses its when vs something like the xx3 3 speed losi thing... i wanna waste him.. :D so i thik i need to make a dirt oval savage for race, make it low, aka 1" drop, my road rage tires, geared for max speed.. can you say 18t cb, picco 26, sway bars, lots of neg camber :D

i still have the
monster pirate steering servo saver 20, diff mod 24, ofna buggy throttle set up 7, 18t cb 20, MIP 7.5 clutch 20 and engine to buy 150-200... so a 202$ truck will become a 500$ truck pretty fast with new engine.. :D but imagine if you just had to fork out 450$ on a new truck and had to do all the upgrades.. im still ahead 250.. and it will eat the savage SS up...

Here is the newest addition to the family. Apparently, the guy that had it before never cleaned the dang thing. It will be a good source of spare parts though!!!

That's an excellent deal! Spare parts..? Why not build it out and make it driveable...it looks like it will once you put an engine in it.

Looks like my used Savage had a cracked block... luckily, I managed to purchase another bare block from Ebay for a few penny's over $10. I already added the Dual Tank mod for another $5 and I modded the throttle/brake linkage for less around $10 or so.... still under the price of a new Savage and this thing hauls *censored* . I now starting to add things that I want- rather than need..... that doesn't sound good

To tell you the truth, I thought about making it my track savage. Tighten up the suspension some, add some pro-line bow ties and other little bits. Right now though, I am sort of at a stand still. I am sure I could have this truck running for pretty cheap, but the other savage needs some TLC too

I will let you guys know what turns out. You never know, you might see it on Ebay someday lol
