"HOW TO" set spur gear with paper

Post by cabbie » Wed Jan 18, 2006 10:05 am

thought i'd do a how to for the newbies on setting the spur mesh with paper

1: cut a strip of paper and fold in half
Image

2: with the engine screws loose place the paper between the spur gear and clutch gear
Image

3: apply pressure with a screwdriver to the clutch bell so the gears are tight and lock the engine down
Image

4: wind the paper out by turning the spur gear
Image

5: hold the clutch bell and rock the spur gear back and forth, you should feel a small amount of movment, turn the spur gear 360deg checking there is the same amount of play all round

Good job. I needed that like a week or two ago. :) (I'm a newbie)
But my last spur gear mesh setting is just perfect. (Fried 2 spurs prior to that one) I think I fried my engine and my diffs today but my spur is still in perfect condition - like brand new. (I'll check her out after I took a shower)

the way i do it, is i put the motor in the truck. and spin the spur untill it sounds super smooth and spins freely. then i tighten up the bolts and do the paper trick to check if its good. and everytime i have to set the mesh i get it perfect on the first try.( usually takes me about 5 min to get everything back up and running)

Ok another words mine is probalby I little tight doesn't move when holding the CB gear and try and move the spur

it grinds a little when I spin spur gear around too

First time setting it so was getting a better idea of the feel for the setting
which I thought I had it right where is was nice and smooth but I thought I try and tighten it up just to see what to tight felt like too. I used the screwdriver on the engine mount instead of the CB maybe that is why I can't get it tight enough to cut the paper.

So I need to back it off just enough so that is spin freely without grinding Correct ?

In case anyone is interested that has a Savage X, for about $10 bucks you can convert the X spur gear to the same the old Savage 25 uses. Most hobby shops have plenty of those spur gears, at least the one in my town. You will need to get 4 pieces. Part #'s 86130, 72130, 76937, and B072. You can download the Savage SS 4.6 manual if you don't have access to one, and on page 23 you will see the parts mentioned. You will be reusing the washer, the spring and the retaining nut that were used on the X setup. I did this today. Once put back together, I ran my Savage X numerous times at full speed across the field and checked the gear. It looked like new. So if you are like I was, waiting on the X spur gear to come in from back order, this might be another option.

What i love about this sport, and I'm a newbie to this, is the friendly folks you meet. As long as you act like a human, most people don't mind helping new people into this hobby. This is a good example of this. Had it not been for new friends, I wouldn't have had help in figuring this out.
