10 Step How-To: Shim The Differentials

10 Step How-To: Shim a Differential
Why do I need to shim the differential?
The Differential Housing cannot support the diff tight enough to keep the ring-and-pinion gear mesh constant. This can cause the failure of the pinion by breaking off some teeth or cause the ring-and-pinion to skip off each other grinding each gears

would it be possible to include a list of what weight silicone is useful for what purposes? thanks for the information on shimming, i'm building new diffs as soon as i can get two more sets of uniform gears. so this was greatly appreciated.

Do you need to shim the 13t bevel gear for front to back play ??

nah the pinion really doesn't need to be shimmed, it's pretty solid. the diff is where shimming is severly needed.

those are the GPM alum. housings. I've been running them for a little over 3 gallons and have had NO pinion or ring gear problems since. They work great...well worth $67.

I've done something similar altho I used a 9/16ths 'C' clip. It was a bit too thick so I stuck it to a piece of masonite with double sided tape and sanded it down with an random orbit sander till it was exactly the right thickness. Can be slipped in after the diff is built and has been in there for a couple gallons now and the ring and pinion look great.

How necessary is this mod/fix? i just bash about, but i do jumps too... and their gettin bigger by the day (till something breaks) but do i need to do this? As ive been going for a gallon now and everythings still smooth with no wear (a gallon isnt too much though i suppose)

How many shims are needed? do i need 2 packs? or just the 1?

Thanx, and great post, very clear and easy to understand :D

sicj - great informative post!

biznazion - I kinda like the c clip idea except for the work it takes to get the right thickness. If you had a few different thicknesses prepared, it would be an easy way to get an emergency diff installation at a race shimmed if needed. :D

If you have a stock housing is it still easy to keep the shims lined up when you put the housing together? I assume this is the proper order per side of the diff:

Bearing--shim(s)--Axle

And then you put the bearing/shim into the housing "slots"?

i did the mod with the stock housings and it worked just fine
no problems
you just have to be carefull that you don't bend them (they are thin you know :P )
haven't had the chance to test them
waiting for other pieces

im not having a problem with my pinion gear. im burning up the spyders on the inside od the diff's. I have nine gallons on my stock pinion's and bevel's. My problem is the spyders on the inside. I know you and i have had problems in the past but im gettin real tired of this crap. Almost thinkin about locking the rear. The front never gives me problems. If you r going to tell me to look in the past post's maybe i moght find time to in the next YEAR! I dont have the time to look endlessly in past posts. I've seen the post on looking at the gears and i have to order. so no choice on what i get. The last ones i got looked good and i even shimmed them all that stuff and 4 runs the 4'th on race day!!!! Was doin' good till' im sure you know. Front weel drive! MMMMMMMM I have lots of revo's out there that im woopin' But please let our differences be at that and show me the way. To further the savage itself. What do ya do when tower,savage-central, send you the bad gears??????? So far these last 4 sets ive bought have not looked like the good ones ont a past post!!! i of course r runnin the 4 gear mod. The first time i did it it ran like 7 GALLONS!!!!!! I'm even runnin the longer screws the whole deal...no leakage, all the juice is still there. This is the best site for the savage. I would really hate for my truck to loose because i'm doin somthing wrong! Am I. I have followed all the posts. even the diff housings are munched. I am stumped.... I really dont want to lock my rear diff. This seems to be my only problem with the savage. everything else is awsome! The whole thing is my stocker motor is about to hit the shelf and i am going bigger or at least better and if my stock motor is doin this then im thinkin' I am asking you or anyone. These gears i've been gettin DO NOT LOOK LIKE THEY SHOULD. It would take months i think to keep sending them back in hopes for at least a good gear set!!!!
